Hong-Kong, 22nd March, 1899.

With reference to your despatch No.314 of the 5th December last, I regret to state that Mr. Charles Crabb, Hospital Warder in the Victoria Gaol, attempted to commit suicide on the 27th ultimo and was removed to the Government Lunatic Asylum on the 28th ultimo, suffering from acute melancholia with suicidal tendencies, according to the medical report.

2. The Principal Civil Medical Officer states that the patient requires constant watching and is not in a fit state to be sent home at present, but if he recovers sufficiently, arrangements might be made for an attendant to accompany him to England. In the meanwhile I would suggest that his friends or relatives be informed of his state of health and asked whether they are prepared to receive him or arrange for his reception into an asylum as soon as it is possible to send him home.

3. I have, of course, terminated Mr. Crabb's appointment on the ground of his infirmity, and I request that a successor may be appointed on the terms contained in the enclosed paper of particulars and sent out to the Colony.

The Right Honourable

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.
